At WUAMAN, we deeply respect and love animals. We want to clarify an important distinction — alpaca yarn and alpaca fur are very different, and both can be completely ethical when handled responsibly.

ALPACA YARN  is different from  ALPACA FUR

🧶 Alpaca Yarn -

Alpaca yarn comes from the annual shearing of alpacas — a gentle and necessary process done once a year, usually in spring.

Shearing does not harm the animals in any way. In fact, it helps them stay healthy and comfortable, preventing overheating during the summer months. The fiber collected during this time is sorted and spun into luxurious, soft alpaca yarn — one of the world’s most sustainable natural fibers.

🦙 Alpaca Fur -

Fur, on the other hand, never comes from live animals.

Alpaca farmers in the Peruvian Andes care deeply for their herds — guiding them to green pastures, protecting them from predators, and providing shelter from harsh mountain weather.
Despite their best efforts, farmers experience losses each year due to natural causes, such as extreme weather or predators.

Instead of letting this go to waste, the fur from these naturally deceased alpacas is carefully collected and used to create beautiful, lasting products. This transforms tragedy into purpose — no animal is ever harmed for its fur.
